The Bestway Group, the largest independent wholesaler in the UK has opened a new branch at Aintree in the North West of England in record building time thanks to main contractor Yorkshire-based PDR Construction.
The £7m new building on a 3.5 acre brownfield site has 80,000 sq ft of sales space and had created 60 new jobs. It is PDR Construction’s third project for the Bestway Group: it recently completed a depot in Luton and is currently on site in Cambuslang, Glasgow.
The construction of the new depot was achieved in a record building time as it took just 16 weeks from the very start of construction to opening. “PDR Construction delivered a highly professional level of service and maintained a focused team for the entire project which enabled us to open on time,” said Younus Sheikh, the Bestway wholesale group managing director.
Modern technology has played a major part in the building with 10 percent of the energy requirement for the building coming from on-site renewable sources. This has been achieved by using a highly innovative method of taking heat from the outside and using it to heat the building and the amount of energy saved is greater than required by UK current legislation. Sophisticated lighting control systems have also been used, to maximize the benefit of natural daylight, giving further energy savings.
At the official opening on Friday 22 October, Bestway property director Malcolm Carter said: “Yesterday, Bestway ‘blessed’ their new Cash and Carry Depot, their 57th, at Aintree and it will trade in time to catch the Christmas trade.
“Today, Bestway Aintree opens for trade to customers – it was a massive team effort. I know that I speak for us all in re-iterating that this is an absolutely huge achievement and one that simply could not have been achieved without everyone doing their bit not just well but very fast and adapting to the need to maybe sequence things, or complete work alongside many other activities concurrently. So far, just 16 weeks since we remediated the site to opening and yes, we have some items still to complete, but we’re trading today!”
The group, which includes Batleys and the recently acquired Scottish company, Bellevue, now has a total of 57 cash and carry branches in England, Scotland and Wales.
A racing theme was adopted to promote the opening of the new branch. On the first day of trading, customers were welcomed with the star appearance of Grand National winner, Amberleigh House. Bestway also sponsored a race at Aintree Racecourse on Sunday 24 October, during a Fun Day event, where the first 100 customers to the new branch were given free tickets to the racing event.
